Next gen interfaces at MIT Media Lab
Design leadership
Product design
OVERVIEW
- Provided design mentorship to an up and coming designer
- Did hands on design work across the interface
- Designed novel interactions leveraging LLMs and a voice UI
Empathize
Technology-augmented collaboration
Cayden Pierce, an MIT Media Lab researcher, set out to build a contextual search engine that elevates conversations by sharing analysis, fact-checking claims, and offering counterarguments. Partnering with Juliana Reider, a developer-turned-designer, I first held deep-dive discussions with Cayden and other researchers to grasp the essence of effective research collaboration.
Define
Defining the solution
We created user flows, sketched out low-fidelity ideas, and had great discussions on what we think a beautiful and engaging experience might look like.
Ideate
Early explorations
Juliana and I both conducted UI explorations and brainstormed different ways we might enrich conversations with technology together.

Prototype
Making our ideas real
We designed our interface to feel alive, organic, sleek, and unobtrusive. We wanted it to enhance conversations, not distract from them.

test
Assessing and improving performance
- Ethnographic interviews
- Usability tests
The iteration loop for this project was very fast. We would get user feedback from Cayden and his team multiple times per week as they were hosting demos at MIT Media Lab. Early on, we also conducted user interviews, and as we proceeded with our design work we would frequently run mini usability tests where we would click around our prototypes to sanity check them.
